Lake Orta is a small but beautiful lake, west of Lake Maggiore. Lake Orta derives its name from the most important and romantic town overlooking it: Orta San Giulio. The area of Lake Orta is picturesque, full of charming villages, so that is considered one of the most romantic of Italy; the landscape is very varied, with lake and mountains surrounding it and creates an atmosphere of great tranquility and serenity. In the middle of the lake lies the picturesque island of San Giulio, almost entirely occupied by the Mater Ecclesiae convent, where she lives a community of Benedictine nuns: the nuns devote themselves mainly to study and prayer, and restoration of ancient and precious tapestries. |
