 Leggiuno Leggiuno

The origin of the name Leggiuno is certainly very old and controversial: the best hypothesis is that it comes from the Celtic words 'leze' (foot) and 'dunums' (hill), meaning the foot of the hill.

Leggiuno is located in a place very favoured by the mild climate even during the winter months. The reputation of this small town can be attributed to one of the most significant monuments of the province of Varese: the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso.

Set in a cliff on one of the deepest points of Lake Maggiore, the Hermitage is a monastic complex consisting of three buildings dating from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. There are numerous pictorial cycles within and outside the walls of the church, covering a period from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century. Art and history are integrated beautifully into a natural framework of the most evocative, almost a balcony that juts out into the lake.
