 Orta San Giulio

The center of Orta San Giulio is characterized by very small narrow alleyways.
On the main square, where there is also the dock with the boats that bring the island of San Giulio, there is the ascent of Motta, whose summit stands the church of Santa Maria Assunta, built in 1485. In Piazza Motta there is also the Broletto, a communal palace dating back to 1582.
In the territory of Orta is situated the Sacro Monte, perched on a hill: unlike other Sacri Monti, the one of Orta is completely dedicated to a saint, San Francesco of Assisi. It was built in three distinct periods between 1590 and 1788.
