Gargnano lies on the western shore of the lake, protected against the cold northern winds by a ring of mountains and hills. Its territory is composed of several hamlets, on hillsides surrounding the village the mild weather has created ideal conditions for the growth of cedar, lemon, olive trees, cypresses.
The center of Gargnano is gathered around the harbor overlooked by elegant palaces, including the communal one, built at the end of 1500. In the facade facing the lake are walled cannon balls that an Austrian ship fired towards the town in 1866 during the Third War of Independence. The oldest church in Gargnano, dedicated to San Giacomo, dates from the twelfth century and was recently restored. Outside, on a side wall, accented with three fourteenth-century frescoes. Inside, on a fine brick altar, collected in a niche, you can admire the sixteenth-century wooden statue of Saint James.
