Sirmione is developed on a thin peninsula that extends for 4 km in the heart of Lake Garda, whose natural features are source of admiration and renown since antiquity.
Catullus called it pearl of all the peninsulas, and even today Sirmione is famous for its prime location; the town is overlooked by an imposing castle Scaligero, built in 1259, strategically located on the only access route to the mainland. The castle of Sirmione is one of the most complete and best preserved in Italy. The peninsula is characterized by the presence of three heights: on the northern one there is the spectacular Roman settlement known as the Grotte di Catullo. Despite the hypothesis that the remains of the imposing Roman villa belonged to the home of the famous Latin poet Catullus, there is no evidence to validate this theory. The archaeological park is nestled in a lush olive groves and enjoys a stunning view over the lake. Sirmione is famous for its hot springs: two spas, called Catullo and Virgilio, offer tourists the opportunity to put together the view of the lake and the culture and history of the place, with the relaxation and well-being donated by their precious water.
