The town is formed by the territory of two ancient villages, lspra and Barza, that were previously independent and only in 1927 they were assembled into a single administrative community.
In the capital of lspra there is the oldest and historic center. This territory was inhabited until ancient times. We know that in the thirteenth century, in the town could be counted among seven churches and chapels, while the nobles in Ispra were among those who mostly contributed towards the building of the nearby Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso, to which the town always retained a special reverence. The main tourist attraction of the town remains the lakefront where you can admire the ancient furnaces for the manufacture of lime.
