Probably of Roman origin, Abbadia Lariana was named from the ancient Benedictine abbey of San Pietro, built in the first half of the ninth century. The building, which now stands along the main road, has been lavishly remodeled in the late nineteenth century; the church of San Lorenzo, with its facade facing the lake, is the reconstruction of the oldest church of San Vincenzo adjoining the abbey.
Abbadia Larian is a peaceful tourist resort from the dry and healthy climate, a great environmental interest, virtually intact preservation of alleys and buildings, are the hamlets hillside: Crebbio, Linzanico and Borbino. Fascinating is the walk on the trail that starts from the village, rose to Robianco after crossing the river Zerbo, continues until the church of Santa Maria (949 m) and following the Val Fredda goes up to Pian dei Resinelli.
