Cernobbio, with its ancient origins, is today one of the most famous and popular town of Lake Como.
The old town is picturesque, and the country offers upscale hotels and restaurants, including the famous Villa d'Este, built in 1568 for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio: After several changes of ownership, the house was sold to the Princess of Wales Caroline of Brunswick, who gave its present name. In 1873 it was restored to turn it into luxury hotel in keeping paintings and sculptures of the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. Other important residences in Cernobbio are: Villa Erba, dominated by a panoramic tower, whose elegantly frescoed halls are ideal for receptions and exhibitions, Villa Pizzo, surrounded by extensive grounds and Villa Fontanelle, famous because it was property of the fashion designer Gianni Versace. From Cernobbio starts the path known as the Via dei Monti Lariani, a long and fascinating walk, which reaches Sorico, the lake's most northern town.
