Today Dongo is an important touristic and industrial center, but the old center of town, overlooking the bay, as well as extending to the villages of Martinico and Barbignano, is the testimony of a past rich in historical events. Among the major monuments, the Santuario della Madonna delle Lacrime, built in the sixteenth century, attached to a Franciscan convent, the beautiful church of Santo Stefano and Palazzo Manzi, on the main square of the village, built in 1824. The square near the lake is often mentioned in history books, because the village of Dongo was the scene at the end of fascism: it is here that on 28th April 1945 the Fascist leaders, captured the day before, while attempting to escape with Mussolini to Switzerland, were shot. Dongo also offers to its visitors a beautiful beach, a sports center and plenty of opportunity to discover the small villages in the mountains, through charming paths arriving to the border with Switzerland.
